Why Traveling While Living Abroad Is Cheaper and More Accessible: My 2024 Adventures in France and Beyond

Why Traveling While Living Abroad Is Cheaper and More Accessible: My 2024 Adventures in France and Beyond

One of the most unexpected and delightful aspects of living abroad in France has been how easily I’ve been able to feed my love for travel. When I lived in the U.S., traveling internationally often felt like an expensive and time-consuming endeavor. Flights were long, connections were tricky, and the overall cost of exploring other countries could add up quickly. But here in France, travel is not only more affordable—it's also far more accessible. From hopping on a train to taking a short flight, I can easily explore some of Europe’s most beautiful and diverse cities.

2024 was a year filled with unforgettable travel experiences, and I’m already looking forward to 2025. Whether it was the vibrant streets of Marseille or the laid-back vibes of Lisbon, each trip was an adventure that reminded me why travel is life. Here’s a peek into my travels from the past year and why living in France has made exploring new places so much easier.

Marseille: A Diverse, Artsy Port City

My first stop in 2024 was the bustling port city of Marseille, located along the southern coast of France. Unlike Nice, which is a bit more relaxed and chic, Marseille is a larger, more vibrant city with an intriguing mix of old-world charm and modern influences. As a port city, Marseille attracts a diverse range of people from different cultures, and this diversity is reflected in the food, the art, and the overall vibe of the city. You’ll find street art murals scattered throughout the city, and the local cuisine showcases an incredible blend of French, North African, and Mediterranean influences.

In August 2024, I had the amazing opportunity to attend one of the Olympic Games events held in Marseille. It was thrilling to witness such a historic moment in a city known for its cultural richness and energy. Marseille is definitely a city to add to your travel list if you’re looking for a more authentic and diverse French experience.

Lisbon, Portugal: Laid-Back Vibes and Delicious Food

Next, I ventured to Lisbon, Portugal, a city that stole my heart with its laid-back atmosphere, pleasant summer temperatures, and warm-hearted locals. Lisbon feels like a perfect blend of relaxed coastal life with a lively cultural scene. The temperatures in summer were just right—not as scorching as other European destinations—and the people were incredibly friendly, always eager to share their tips and love for the city.

The food in Lisbon was a standout, particularly the local seafood. One of my favorite dishes was bacalhau, a salt-cured cod that’s a staple of Portuguese cuisine. It’s flavorful and satisfying, and I’ve quickly grown to love it. And of course, I couldn’t leave without trying pastéis de nata, the famous Portuguese custard tart that melts in your mouth and makes every bite feel like a special treat.

Ibiza, Spain: A Quick Getaway to Paradise

Looking for a change of pace, I took a quick getaway to Ibiza, Spain—a place known for its lively nightlife but also its serene beaches. While Ibiza is famous for its bustling party scene, I found peace and tranquility by escaping the crowds and heading to the quieter beaches away from the center of town. The beauty of the island’s coastline, combined with its chill vibe, allowed me to experience the best of both worlds—lively evenings and peaceful mornings by the sea.

Saint Tropez: A Small Town with Big Expectations

For a more local experience, I took a quick trip to Saint Tropez, which is just a 2.5-hour boat ride from Nice. Despite its reputation as a glamorous playground for the rich and famous, I was surprised to find that Saint Tropez is actually a small, charming town, far more understated than what you might see on social media. The narrow streets, quaint boutiques, and relaxed atmosphere gave me a refreshing perspective on this famous destination. The boat ride itself was a beautiful experience—gliding over the Mediterranean with the sun shining, offering views of the coastline that were as picturesque as they come.

Travel in France: An Endless Exploration of Unknown Gems

One of the greatest joys of living in France is the ability to travel to so many incredible places without spending an arm and a leg on flights. The extensive train network makes it easy to explore new cities and towns, and with the cost of living here being more affordable, I can take more spontaneous trips without worrying about breaking the bank.

In 2024, I made it a point to visit not just famous destinations but also explore some lesser-known gems. France is full of hidden towns and villages that offer a rich cultural experience without the tourist crowds. In 2025, I’m excited to dive deeper into the unexplored corners of France—whether it’s charming countryside villages, undiscovered beaches, or historic towns that haven’t been commercialized yet.

The Freedom to Travel More

Living in France has given me the freedom to travel more. It’s cheaper to fly to nearby countries, and traveling within France is incredibly easy, thanks to the well-connected train system. The ability to hop on a train to nearby cities like Marseille, Saint Tropez, or even take a flight to places like Lisbon and Ibiza has been a dream come true for someone like me, who has always had a passion for travel.

For those of you who are considering a move abroad, I can’t stress enough how much easier and more affordable travel becomes once you’re based in Europe. You have access to a variety of countries, cultures, and landscapes—all just a short flight or train ride away.

A Pledge for 2025

Looking ahead to 2025, I’m pledging to continue my exploration of both well-known and undiscovered gems in France and beyond. Whether it’s learning about new cities and towns

in France or venturing out to nearby European destinations, travel will remain a central part of my life.

The opportunities are endless, and as I continue to settle into this slower, more fulfilling life here in France, I’m excited about all the new experiences that await. Travel, after all, is not just about the places you visit—it’s about the memories you create, the lessons you learn, and the joy you find along the way.

So here’s to 2025: A year of more exploration, more adventures, and the beauty of living life fully. Because, when it comes down to it, travel is life!
